Just tasted today!
Every once in a while, divine things happen in the wine hall
on busy tasting days. Today, March 11 was one of those days.
It was special because I got my introduction to a pretty
amazing new project, Sadler Wells. It is co-owned by a pair
of women who are well grounded in viticulture and winemaking
in Sonoma. What I tasted today will be wines you will want
to have.
Winemaker, Jean Spear tasted us on two wines: A 2001 Pinot
Noir from Sonoma Coast, and a 1999 Cabernet Sauvignon from
three distinct, complementary properties also in Sonoma.
Sadler Wells 1999
Sonoma Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 19/20 points $46.95
A wine that is very dark in color, with gobs of black
fruits – figs, black cherry and black currant in the nose.
The flavors take a cue from the aromatic structure, and are
broad and generous. Undoubtedly the combination of hillside
structure and floor level smoothness, have been blended in a
fashion showing characteristics we seldom experience.
Sadler Wells 2001
Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir
18.5/20 points $31.95
A new release showing a nearly ethereal rose petal,
cherry, orange spice and herb nose, backed up by
recognizable elegance on the palate. Black cherry, sassafras
and vanilla spice flavors abound.
Production on these wines is only about 500
cases each. I am moving forward to get these in the market
now.
